Dear Karori Medical Centre Patients
We would like to update you on the cyber security incident that involved unauthorised access to some Manage My Health (MMH) data. Karori Medical Centre subscribes to MMH as a third-party patient portal system to integrate with our Practice Management System.
The data breach relates to the Health Documents function within MMH. We do not actively use this function as a practice to store any information, notes or results. Individuals however, may have chosen to store documents and records themselves under this function. Additionally, MMH advise that Hospital Discharge Documents from Northland Hospital and some specialist referral letters sent between 2017 and 2019 were contained in the Health Documents function that was illegally accessed.
We have been told that approximately 3.5% of our current patients are affected in this data breach. These patients will soon be contacted by MMH directly. Notified patients will be advised how they can access more information and support. This incident is being managed by Health New Zealand, The Office of the Privacy Commissioner and Manage My Health.
Manage My Health have a FAQ https://managemyhealth.co.nz/faqs-cyber-breach/ which gives more information. They can also be contacted at support@managemyhealth.co.nz
No data that Karori Medical Centre has received or holds directly is part of this incident. All consultation notes, results and messaging between patients and clinicians remains secure and confidential.
At this time Karori Medical Centre continues to use Manage My Health, we have been assured that the system has been deemed safe by both Health New Zealand and cybersecurity experts. It is the way that many of our patients access healthcare and interact with us.
We share our patients concerns as to how this occurred and are aware of the distress that an incident like this brings. We expect that affected patients will receive a notification from MMH as a next step in the coming days. We will continue to update our website with relevant information as we receive it.
Kind Regards
Karori Medical Centre
